Best Time of Year for a Boat Trip in Rio de Janeiro

Operations run all year round, 09:00 to 19:00, every day. But the month changes the water temperature, the wind and the chance of afternoon rain, and that changes the experience more than most people expect before booking.

September to March: the most comfortable window

The water sits between 24°C and 28°C, the day is longer and the sea tends to be calm inside the bay on most days. This is the window where the swim stop pays off most, because the water is not cold enough to cut the swim short.

Month by month

September to November (spring)

Around 25°C to 30°C, generally calm seas and a less crowded calendar than summer. This is the period with the best balance between sea conditions and date availability.

December to February (summer)

The warmest and most sought-after period of the year, which means booking further ahead, especially for December and New Year. Quick late-afternoon showers are common at this time, but they usually pass in minutes and do not affect a morning trip.

March to May (autumn)

March tends to hold onto summer heat with a lighter calendar already. April and May cool down gradually, and the sea can get rougher on days a cold front comes through.

June to August (winter)

The clear-sky days of Rio winter make for great photos, with drier air and longer sight lines. The water sits between 20°C and 22°C, cold for anyone planning to swim a lot, but no issue for anyone who just wants the trip and the view.

What to check beyond the weather forecast

A rain forecast is not the same thing as sea conditions. A cloudy day can have a flat sea, and a sunny day can bring rough water because of wind or a swell arriving from far away. Worth checking the swell forecast, not just the weather one.

Days right after a cold front passes tend to have a rougher sea, even under clear skies. If your date is flexible, the following day is usually back to normal.

Morning or afternoon

In the morning the water inside the bay tends to be flattest, because the wind has not picked up yet. In the afternoon more wind comes in, which helps the view but leaves the water a bit choppier. For anyone prioritising comfort, especially with children or older guests in the group, the morning departure pays off.

If the weather turns

Light rain does not cancel the trip. Only heavy rain or sea conditions considered unsafe do, and in that case the date is rescheduled at no cost.
